Heracles Postcard

Inspired by an email exchange between philosophers Lieven De Cauter and Dieter Lesage, Domus invited readers to send in their ideas in the form of a postcard for possible ways to connect the European and African continents across the Strait of Gibraltar – Project Heracles.

Working in collaboration, Pernilla Ohrstedt and Asif Khan proposed an inconspicuous extension to the Northern Line – the Fnideq Branch, which turns off just south of Balham. The postcard was designed in the form of a tube map correction sticker.

The proposal was featured in Domus and was exhibited at the Gopher Hole in London, alongside other entries which ranged in scale—and feasibility— from a simple cable car to a giant floating Mediterranean city, frequently questioning the troubled history of the relationship between the two continents.
