Glitch Space – Dezeen & MINI Frontiers

Glitch Space, created for Dezeen & MINI Frontiers, visualises the digital data that driverless vehicles will capture in order to navigate the built environment. As cars become cartographers by continually 3D scanning their surroundings, we will gradually collect an ever-updating 1:1 replica of the world, in the form of a digital “point cloud”.

Collaborating with ScanLAB Projects, the space at The Old Sorting Office in London was scanned for a fraction of a second at the low resolution that the first driverless cars will render the world in – full of glitches and imperfections. The 3D data obtained from this was superimposed back onto its physical counterpart, draping a complex web of over 150,000 white vinyl dots onto the space with pinpoint precision.
